Client: Fans For Christ (FFC)
Challenge: Create a logo/Coat of Arms to be used on shirts, banners and other promotional materials.
I’m a geek and love gaming, sci-fi and fantasy. I found out one of the fandom groups was in the need of a new logo and were doing a contest to find one. I don’t normally enter design contests but I like this fan group and agree with what they are promoting. I also thought it might be fun to create and different than my normal routine.
I came up with a quick draft and sent it in. It was very rough, as you can see above, but I tried to include ideas in for gaming, sci-fi, fantasy and steam punk. They liked the basic concept but wanted to see it more sci-fi, fantasy.
I re-did the gun to be more sci-fi looking (yes I know there are some inaccuracies on it but it looked cooler this way). I also made the sword more like something out of Conan. The gear in the background wasn’t doing any thing so I removed it. The text on the banner was bothering me also. I sent it back to the FFC and they liked it much better but wanted to see some other tweaks; remove the meeple (the game figure guy) and make the dice bigger.
I did remove the meeple and make the dice bigger. I was really starting to like the coat of arms. I sent it back and the guys at FFC liked it also. They sat on it for a few days and asked if I could separate the dice and add a console controller to replace the cards since many fans like to video game. Not a problem. I was having fun with this coat of arms.
Above is the finalized coat of arms. I’m pleased with the way it came out. You can see that I fixed the text in the banner so it looks much better and changed the direction of the woodgrain in the gun stock so it was correct. The controller I created has a metallic finish to bring back the steampunk theme and video-games. The gun has the sic-fi/anime feel to it, the sword and shield invoking ideas of fantasy and the dice for tabletop and RPG games. The shield has the cross in the center representing Christ who should be at the center of it all.
I really like the look and feel it has. Working with the FFC team was great. Once they had an idea to work from they gave great feedback to help develop something they liked and I liked. As I said before I don’t usually enter logo/design contests but I felt this one was worth it and would be fun.
